Today is the birthday of the second President of Azerbaijan, leader of the national liberation movement Abulfaz Elchibey, APA reports.
Abulfaz Elchibey was born on June 24, 1938 in Kalaki village of Ordubad region. In 1957 he entered the faculty of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan State University and graduated in 1962.
He was one of the leaders of the people's movement that began in Azerbaijan in 1988, one of the founders of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan.
Abulfaz Elchibey, who was elected President of Azerbaijan in 1992, left Baku for Kalaki a year later as a result of the uprising in Ganja. Abulfaz Elchibey, whose powers were abolished by the decision of the Milli Majlis, continued his activity as the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan and the All-Azerbaijan Union.
Abulfaz Elchibey, who died on August 22, 2000, at the Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Turkey after a long illness, was brought to Baku and buried in the Alley of Honors.
