Azerbaijan starts applying a fee for polythene bags in trade networks and markets starting today, APA-Economics reports.
The polyethylene bags are sold to buyers in markets for 1, 3, or 5 coins, depending on their size.
Notably, a letter was addressed to the Public Union for the Development of Trade Networks by the Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control State Service, the State Tax Service under the Ministry of Economy, and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The letter reads that to reduce the harmful effects of polyethylene bag waste on the environment, following the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 25 dated February 2, 2021, starting from that date, polyethylene bags with a size of 15-50 microns, intended for collecting products in market checkouts, must be paid as a separate product type.
"In this regard, starting from February 15, 2023, polyethylene bags will be provided to customers for a fee to increase the efficiency of the measures aimed at solving environmental problems, to ensure prompt resolution, including for the purpose of improving the environment," the information said.
