German government officials have agreed on Wednesday to extend the partial coronavirus lockdown until December 20 in an effort to fight the pandemic, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The country's Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the measures have "achieved a good result" but the current situation does not allow the restrictions yet to be lifted. The chancellor warned that areas with the highest infection rates will face tougher restrictions.

Gatherings will be limited to five people except for Christmas, when groups of up to ten will be allowed to meet, Merkel added.
