German Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to ban travel as she claimed her country was "sitting on a powder keg" due to the spread of new COVID-19 variants, APA reports coting Teletrader.

Merkel also stated that it is uncertain if the ongoing lockdowns can be lifted in February and added new cases of the coronavirus could spread rapidly in Germany over the next few weeks. Calling for stricter measures, the chancellor described the current reaction to curbing COVID-19 as "out of control."
