German Chancellor Angela Merkel refused an invitation by United States President Donald Trump to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit in-person, a spokesperson for the German government said, APA reports citing Politico news outlet.

"As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington," the news outlet was told by the spokesman.

Previously, the US president said holding the summit in Washington DC despite the coronavirus worries would be "very important" for the world, while the White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany claimed the event taking place in the country would be the "greatest example" of the US reopening.
