Poland has reported the highest number of new virus-related deaths so far this year - 653 in 24 hours, APA reports citing BBC.

The number of new infections has risen by 10% compared with a week ago and there are more people in hospital now than at any time since the pandemic began.

Doctors report there are now no free ICU beds within 150km (93 miles) of the capital Warsaw. In the worst affected areas, patients are being transferred to different regions.

An additional 7,000 regular beds are being readied with hospital admissions expected to surge over the next two weeks.

The surge in cases is primarily being caused by the rampant UK variant of the virus that is now responsible for four out of every five infections.
