Sweden recorded its deadliest week this century after 2,505 people died in a seven-day period earlier this month, APA reports citing Daily Mail.

The country has been the focus of global attention after it adopted a softer approach to combating coronavirus which did not involve imposing a full-scale lockdown.

But during the week before Easter - April 6 to 12 - the equivalent of 358 people died each day, according to figures from Statistics Sweden which were reported by media outlet The Local.

The overall figure is almost 150 more deaths than in Sweden's second deadliest week in 2000, which saw 2,364 people die during the first week of the year.
