Britain has today recorded its worst coronavirus death toll rise in 24 hours yet, APA reports citing UK media.

New official figures show the toll has risen to 1,019 today, leaping by 260 from 759 the previous day.

The Department of Health and Social Care figures for Saturday recorded the total number of people to test positive for Covid-19 hitting 17,089, with 103,687 testing negative.

It comes as officials race to build hospitals to accommodate the growing number of Covid-19 cases.

The photos from inside the new NHS Nightingale hospital built by the Defence Force to help treat London’s coronavirus patients, have been released by the Prime Minister’s office.

The makeshift hospitals are also being built in Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff.

The capital's new hospital usually operates as ExCel London, but will eventually hold thousands of beds equipped with ventilators and oxygen will be used to treat the seriously ill.

Work on the hospitals comes as NHS heroes fighting coronavirus on the frontline will begin being tested for the virus from this weekend.

Health bosses have confirmed testing on England's frontline staff will begin this weekend, with doctors and nurses at the front of the queue.

The desperately-needed tests to determine whether medics have contracted Covid-19 will continue over the week, with ambulance staff and paramedics next in line.

And experts say Britain's coronavirus outbreak could peak as early as next Sunday with the lockdown over by summer.

Researchers at Imperial College London believe the country's death toll could in fact be as low as 5,700 - but only if people strictly obey the government restrictions.

The UK's death toll so far soared to 759 on Friday, up 181, while the number of cases rose to more than 14,500.

Donald Trump claims Boris Johnson opened a phone call to him with the line 'we need more ventilators' in a grim picture for the UK's fight against the deadly coronavirus.
