Wizz Air has announced plans to restart selected flights from London Luton airport on May 1, APA reports citing Business Traveller.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier said it would initially operate flights to the following destinations, “subject to no further restrictions”:

  • Hungary: Budapest
  • Romania: Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Suceava, Targu Mures, Satu Mare and Timisoara
  • Serbia: Belgrade
  • Slovakia: Bratislava and Kosice
  • Portugal: Lisbon
  • Spain: Tenerife
  • Israel: Tel Aviv

Wizz Air is one of the biggest carriers at Luton along with Easyjet, and pre-coronavirus was operating around 60 routes from the London airport.

Last year Wizz Air launched routes from Luton to destinations including Krakow, Moscow, and St Petersburg.

The airline said that it would implement “new protocols” to support social distancing during boarding and enhanced cleaning on board.

Customers must check-in and make any purchases for services such as additional baggage online, “to reduce non-essential interaction at the airport”.

During flights cabin crew will be required to wear masks and gloves, and will distribute sanitising wipes to passengers, while customers will be “encouraged” to pay for onboard purchases by contactless payment.

The airline also said it would “continue its stringent daily cleaning schedule, with the entire aircraft being disinfected overnight in line with official guidelines”.

The move to restart flights has prompted a forum discussion on what constitutes essential travel during the ongoing pandemic.

Commenting on the news Owain Jones, managing director of Wizz Air UK said:

“As we restart selected Luton flights to provide an essential service to passengers who need to travel, our primary concern is the health, safety and well-being of our customers and crew.

“The protective measures that we are implementing will ensure the most sanitary conditions possible. We encourage our customers to watch our new video on how to stay safe when travelling, as well as for more details on our new health and safety measures.”
