The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) insisted on Monday that the probability of the further spread of monkeypox among the broader population globally in the coming months "is assessed as very low," APA reports citing Tele Trader.
However, it warned that the individual risk for very young children, pregnant women, elderly or immunocompromised individuals "may be high due to the higher impact of the disease in these groups."
The ECDC explained that human-to-human transmission of MPX occurs through close contact, either via skin lesions or respiratory droplets.
It said the smallpox vaccine, if administered within four days after exposure to monkeypox, "can have significant protective effect," depending on the patient profile and type of vaccine.
"To date, the vast majority of cases have mild to moderate symptoms and are all recovering well. However, numbers are still low and the severity profile of the disease cannot be reliably estimated," the agency added.
