European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Sunday that the Belarusian regime has committed "systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations," citing a recent United Nations report that indicated they "may amount to crimes against humanity," APA reports citing Teletrader.

He said the report found that many political prisoners in Belarus are "incarcerated in appalling conditions and exposed to ill-treatment and torture."

Borrell also said that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko "continues to undermine Belarus’ independence and sovereignty by subduing the country to Russia and collaborating with Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine," as well as persecuting Belarusian citizens who support Ukraine. He said the EU demands that Belarus release all political prisoners and live up to its international obligations.
