The European Union has frozen €17 billion worth of Russian assets since Moscow started its military operation in Ukraine, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders told Funke Media Group in an interview, APA reports citing Reuters.

The official said the money could be used to rebuild Ukraine, but noted that it is far from enough to finance reconstruction. "If it is criminal money confiscated by the EU, it is possible to transfer it to a compensation fund for Ukraine," Reynders was quoted as saying.

He added that the frozen billions in the Central Bank of Russia's foreign exchange reserves could also be used as s a guarantee until Russia "voluntarily" decides to participate in post-war reconstruction.
