At least 12 fighter jets from Germany, Italy and Hungary will start patrolling the airspace over the Baltic countries from August 1, said the press service of NATO, APA reports.

Four German Eurofighters will operate from the Ämari airfield in Estonia, four Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 fighters from the Siauliai airfield in Lithuania, and Italian fighters will operate from the Malbork airbase in Poland, the report said.

German, Hungarian and Italian air force fighters will replace the Belgian, French and Spanish combat aircraft, which have been performing corresponding tasks in the Baltics since April.

The air forces of the NATO member countries alternately patrol the airspace of the Baltic countries after they joined the alliance in 2004, since they do not have their own air forces, NATO reminded.
