Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said on Tuesday that most major European Union member states are against giving Ukraine the status of a candidate to join the bloc, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"The status of EU candidate for Ukraine is objected to by almost all the major states of the Union, I would say all of them, excluding Italy," Draghi stated and noted it is unlikely Ukraine will be granted such status.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said that Kiev does not expect to become a member of the bloc soon but wants a "guaranteed spot" in the EU. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron noted it could take years for Ukraine's accession to the bloc. The EU is expected to give its opinion on Kiev's membership bid in June.
