Latvia is set to reinstate compulsory military service for men next year amid growing tensions with Russia, Defence Minister Artis Pabriks announced, APA reports quoting Teletrader.

"The current military system of Latvia has reached its limit," said Pabrikis, noting that the Baltic state has "no reason to think that Russia will change its behavior."

The country, which neighbors both Russia and Belarus, had ditched compulsory service a few years prior to joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and currently has 7,500 troops, backed by 1,500 NATO soldiers.
