"Finland and Sweden will each decide to apply for membership to NATO and if they decide to apply for membership, in this case, NATO will embrace these countries," said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the joint press conference today with the President of the European Parliament, APA reports.

Responding to the question of how NATO will guarantee security for Sweden and Finland during the process of admission to membership, Stoltenberg noted that NATO’s statement on being ready to accept these countries gives a strong social message.

“It means that the security of Finland and Sweden is important for NATO allies and makes sense. I am sure that if this process begins, until the parliaments of 30 countries ratify the documents on this application, i.e. in the transition period an agreement on some mechanism on ensuring the security of these two countries may be reached,” Stoltenberg added.
