One person died late on Wednesday when the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka was hit by a storm and torrential rainfall, local media reported on Thursday. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, APA reports citing Xinhua.

The strong downpour flooded the city center and damaged several houses, schools and museums. The meteorological service in Rijeka said that the city received more rainfall on Wednesday -- 222 liters per square meter -- than the average in September.

On Thursday, the city was recovering from the floods. Overnight, the firefighters responded to more than 100 calls.

Rijeka Mayor Marko Filipovic said on Wednesday that the city had not experienced a flood like this for years.
