Two Canadian volunteer soldiers have been killed in the eastern Ukrainian battleground of Bakhmut while serving with the country’s International Legion, APA reports citing Toronto Star.

Cole Zelenco, of St. Catharines, and Kyle Porter, of Calgary, were reportedly killed late last week.

Zelenco was a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who was released from service so that he could fight in Ukraine, according to a GoFundMe page seeking donations to help his family repatriate his body.

“He performed two tours in Ukraine in 2022 and 2023. While protecting the city of Bakhmut, he passed away on April 26, 2023,” reads a message on the site, which has helped raise more than $36,000.

Porter, a former Canadian Army medic, was among a team of search-and-rescue operators with the Canadian International Rescue Organization who travelled to Kyiv last year.
