UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday welcomed the extension of an agreement allowing Ukraine to export grain, APA reports citing Reuters.

"I welcome the agreement by all parties to continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative to facilitate the safe navigation of export of grain, foodstuffs and fertilizers from Ukraine," Guterres said in a statement, shared by the Istanbul-based Joint Coordination Center (JCC) that has been overseeing the agreement brokered by Turkey and the UN.

"The United Nations is also fully committed to removing the remaining obstacles to exporting food and fertilizers from the Russian Federation," he said.

European Council President Charles Michel welcomed the decision to prolong the grain deal, calling it "good news."

"I welcome the extension of Black Sea Grain Initiative. With 10 million tonnes of grain already exported under this initiative from Ukraine this is good news for a world that badly needs access to grain and fertilisers," Michel tweeted.

"I congratulate Antonio Guterres and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the agreement on the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

Together with EU Solidarity Lanes the UN Black Sea Grain Initiative helps avoid global food shortages and bring down food prices despite Russia’s war," European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen wrote on Twitter.
