The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported on Wednesday that it has registered a volcano eruption on the Fagradalsfjall mountain in the country's southwest after a year of inactivity, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"Eruption has started in Meradalir about 1.5 kilometers north of Stora Hrut. It is possible that pollution can be detected due to the gas release," the official warning noted.

The activity of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, located around 40 kilometers from the capital city of Reykjavik, wasn't detected for 815 years until March last year, when a fissure vent appeared in the southern part of the mountain, followed by a lava eruption in September.
