The website of the National Bank of Azerbaijan said the decision is effective for local banks from August 14.
The decision comes after the top management of the both companies promised to discontinue money transfer transactions with the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan blocked Western Union and MoneyGram on July 30 as a result of their continuing money transfers to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan despite repeated requests from the central bank.
The central bank had discovered that Contact, Western Union, Zolotaya-Korono-Denejnie Perevodi, MoneyGram, Migom, Private Money, Leader payment transfer companies carried out money transfers to Azerbaijan’s occupied lands and they posted distorted maps and place names of the country in their websites. After warnings all companies except Western Union and MoneyGram had halted operations immediately and undertaken not to do this again.
