UEFA Vice-President Michele Uva has revealed clubs can ‘still participate’ in the European Cups despite coming from a terminated domestic championship, APA-Sport reports.

The debate about the resumption of European football is ongoing and with the respective nations in Europe facing different futures, Vice-President Uva has assured that UEFA will hold the door open also for the clubs without a championship to return to the European Cups.

“Every decision that will be taken will have the public health as a basic and binding principle,” Uva told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “We are particularly pleased to have managed to find a path shared with the 55 federations, with the ECA, the European Leagues and the players.

“We are trying to help the Federations, Leagues and clubs to resume the championships by inserting the European Cups in the middle. It’s not our first alternative to play the Leagues first and then the Cups.

But the reasoning must take into consideration that the various competitions might resume at different times, depending on the respective governments’ decisions.

And after the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium became the first major competition in Europe to assign a winner and terminate the season due to the coronavirus, Uva reassured that they can still compete in the European Cups if they are not obliged to stop ‘due to a decree’.

“If the championship is not played due to a government decree, that’s one account. If there is the possibility to train and play but the championship has been suspended, a club can still participate in the cups.”
