Azerbaijani MFA issues statement on construction of third highway connecting Azerbaijan’s occupied territories with Armenia

The Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan has issued a statement on the construction of a new highway between Armenia and Azerbaijan’s occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region, APA reports.
The statement reads:
“The laying of the another, third road passing through the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and connecting Armenia with our country’s Nagorno Garabagh region currently being under occupation is a part of the illegal activity implemented by the occupant Armenia in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Garabagh region and adjacent regions. This step taken by Armenia pursues the goal of the occupant country to consolidate occupation of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Garabagh region and adjacent regions, and also may serve for the purposeful changing of demographic situation on these territories, the continuation of illegal settlement, the implementation of plundering, exploitation of and transportation of natural resources.
Quite a great number of evidences proving the illegal activity implemented by the occupant country has been shown in the report drawn up by the MFA of the Azerbaijan Republic as early as in 2016 and entitled as “The illegal economic and other activities on Azerbaijan’s occupied territories”, as well as in the reports drawn up by the MFA of the Azerbaijan Republic in 2019 and reflecting the photographs of the illegal activity on Azerbaijan’s territories being under occupation by Armenia produced by Azercosmos OJSC and shot from satellite. These evidences reveal the implementation of illegal transportation of natural resources along the occupied part of the international border between Azerbaijan and Armenia and Armenia’s role as a transportation gateway for transportation from Azerbaijan’s occupied territories to international markets of the products illegally manufactured on those territories, as well as the natural resources. Thus, the main purpose of laying by Armenia of the third trunk highway passing though Azerbaijan’s occupied territories is to consolidate the occupation just via continuation of illegal activity by the occupant country, and this clearly shows the intention to implement the annexation of the Azerbaijani territories.
Armenia’s illegal actions contradict with its own international obligations, as well as represent the blatant violation of the norms and principles of international law and the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and its Additional Protocols. It is well known that the international community has got reflected its unambiguous position regarding Armenia’s occupational policy in multiple decisions and documents adopted so far and most importantly in relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. At the same time, the resolutions and statements denouncing illegal activity on the territories occupied by Armenia, as well as calling for refraining from provision of any aid including assistance in economic activity aimed at conservation of the situation developed as a result of the occupation have been adopted by the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement. Meanwhile, the adoption of the joint declaration by members of the European Parliament in regard to Armenia’s illegal activity should be evaluated as a concrete appeal addressed to the occupant country.
Armenia’s policy of attempting to annex Azerbaijan’s occupied territories is doomed to failure. The only way of achieving sustainable solution of the conflict is to ensure unconditional and full withdrawal of Armenia’s armed forces from Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Garabagh region and other occupied territories as is demanded in relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.
The full responsibility for the occupational policy conducted against Azerbaijan, keeping Azerbaijani territories under military occupation and violation of fundamental rights of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis subjected to ethnic cleansing on these territories, as well as for all illegal activities implemented on these lands falls on Armenia. Sooner or later, the occupant country will face the consequences of its actions".
