“Cooperation between the Turkish Armed Forces and the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has a long history,” said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the press conference held in a video format for local and foreign journalists, APA reports.
The head of the state noted that the Turkish and Azerbaijani Armed Forces have been together at all times: "Answering one of the questions, I said that in 2019 alone, more than 10 joint military research were conducted in both Azerbaijan and Turkey. The first research of this year was conducted. The establishment of a joint center means the arrival of the Turkish Armed Forces in the Karabakh region, the arrival in Azerbaijan. I think this can be considered a historic event, and we are very pleased. I must note that the establishment of the Turkish-Russian Joint Monitoring Center is a joint decision of the three countries. Armenia simply had to agree to this. Because when the November 10 statement was signed, Armenia was not in a position to protest. Armenia, as they say, was on its own. If there was another political and military situation, Armenia would protest. However, he could not object to this, and we also said that this center is being established in Azerbaijan, what does Armenia have to do with this? Therefore, the establishment of this center can be considered a historic event. In addition, as you said, I said that a large delegation came from Turkey, more than 100 people. Demining and training courses were conducted. It continues to operate. After that, our cooperation will continue in various fields, including the military. I said during the war, and everyone knows that the Turkish Army is one of the strongest in the world. It is the second-largest army in NATO, and we are determined to create a small model of the Turkish army in Azerbaijan. Practical work has already begun in this area."
The President said that during the war we gained new experience: "Because our army almost did not take part in wars and simply approached this area from a theoretical point of view. Now the war is a great experience, and we must draw the right conclusions from this experience. We have had great success. At the same time, there were some shortcomings during the war. We do not hide it. The decisions I made during the war as Commander-in-Chief, including those related to military personnel, show that there were some problems, but we solved them. Turkey and Azerbaijan have a very broad legal framework. Many documents and agreements have been signed. Among them are documents that identify issues of mutual military assistance. Of course, if there is any threat to Azerbaijan, we are sure that Turkey will be behind us. Because there are many factors to be sure. During the war, in the first days, my dear brother, the words of not only Azerbaijan but also Turkey, which the President said in his statements, became a message for many, a signal to stay away, not to interfere, not to hinder Azerbaijan. These were the messages. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and other high-ranking officials unequivocally supported Azerbaijan."
