A telephone conversation took place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov on September 30, the press service of the Foreign Ministry told APA.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concern over the tension in the region and stressed the importance of achieving a ceasefire. He suggested that Russia mediate efforts to defuse tensions, both nationally and with the other Minsk Group co-chairs.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in turn, noted that the main cause of tension in the region is the Armenian side. The Minister noted that since September 27, the Armenian Armed Forces have been conducting counter-attacks along the line of contact in response to a new act of aggression against Azerbaijani positions within the framework of the right to self-defense and to protect the civilian population.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other side that the Armenian side, which purposefully targeted Azerbaijani civilians and facilities, fired artillery at civilians in gross violation of fundamental norms and principles of international law, including international humanitarian law, and caused casualties among the Azerbaijani civilian population.
