The reputable members of the Italian parliament, the chairman of the Senate’s permanent commission for foreign relations, senator Vito Petroccelli, the chairman of Italy’s delegation to OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and deputy chairman of the Permanent Commission for foreign relations of the Chamber of Deputies, deputy Paolo Grimoldi, as well as the chairman of the Group of Inter-parliamentary Friendship with Azerbaijan in the Italian Parliament, senator Stefano Luccidi and the chairman of the Association of Inter-parliamentary Friendship with Azerbaijan in the Italian Parliament, deputy Rossana Boldi have issued statements condemning provocations of Armenia’s armed forces committed on July 12 in Tovuz direction of Azerbaijan-Armenia state border and supporting Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, APA reports.
The statement of the chairman of the Senate’s permanent commission for foreign relations, senator Vito Petroccelli says there is a threat of re-ignition of a very dangerous war at the doorstep of Europe.
“The Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Garabagh conflict caused the death of over thirty thousand people and ending up in a position of an internally displaced person of one million people in the early 1990s. The intensive armed clashes that occurred yesterday using artillery are a serious violation of the ceasefire regime achieved in 1994 and a great obstacle to the restoration of negotiations that have got stuck on the blind alley for some period. The official Baku has provided information about military provocations of the Armenian side and has said the official Yerevan has been hampering the negotiations for a long time. I call for compliance with the ceasefire regime and international law, as well as the four UN resolutions adopted in 1993 supporting Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and demanding the withdrawal of the Armenian troops from the territories occupied by Armenia’s armed forces. The international community should interfere in this issue in the shortest time to prevent the development of this situation into a new war hotspot”, is emphasized in the statement of V. Petroccelli.
The statement of the Chairman of Italian delegation under OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies, deputy Paolo Grimoldi notes that he learned with regretfully the news on armed conflict in Tovuz region, in the north of Nagorno Garabagh along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border: “It is important to remind that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline (the pipeline which supplies Italy with oil) and South Caucasus gas pipeline pass through the territory of Tovuz and nonstability will show its heavy impact on Europe too. The provocations and confrontations are not the way of solution. Based on the territorial integrity of the states and inviolability of the internationally recognized borders, as well as the resolutions adopted by UN Security Council on 1993, I hope the efforts of Italy for the return of the sides as soon as possible to the negotiating table under the auspices of the OSCE.”
The chairperson of the Interparliamentary Friendship Group with Azerbaijan in the Italian Parliament, Senator Stefano Lucidi, and chairperson of the Interparliamentary Friendship Association with Azerbaijan in the Italian Parliament, MP Rossana Boldi have also made a joint statement.
