“The Agreement about the continuation of construction, operation of Khudaferin and Giz Galasi waterworks facilities and hydroelectric stations over Araz river and cooperation in the area of use of energy and water reserves was signed on February 23, 2016 and the parties to this Agreement are the Governments of the Azerbaijan Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran”, said the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov, APA reports.

He said this Agreement is based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of both states: “Proceeding from those principles, the significance of the restoration of territorial integrity of the Azerbaijan Republic has been emphasized in the Agreement in accordance with requirements of the Un Resolutions. Moreover, according to the Agreement, the parties are jointly functioning for the continuation of construction, operation of Khudaferin and Giz Galasi waterworks facilities, and hydroelectric stations over the near-border Araz river based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as benefits of the two countries”.

Kh. Khalafov has also commented on the issues touched upon in the media regarding the implementation of the agreement.

He stated that news circulated by the media on the construction of the bridges, “Khudafarin” and “Giz Galasi” hydro junctions and hydropower plants should be reviewed within the framework of the implementation of projects in accordance with the Agreement: “As stated by the Embassy of Iran Islamic Republic, the part of dams and bridges falling on the territory of Azerbaijan is accepted by the Iranian side within the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This is reflected on the mentioned Agreement in force, approved by the parliaments of both countries.

Speaking of the high level of mutual trust, friendship, and good neighborly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, we believe that these bridges serve to the implementation of projects regarding the “Khudafarin” and “Giz Galasi” hydro junctions and hydropower plants.”
