The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Turkey has commented on the interview of the Prime Minister of Armenia to the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, Turkish MFA respond to the inquiry of APA’s Turkish bureau.

The statements of Armenian PM does not reflect the current situation accurately.

“When referring to both the common memory of Turkish public, scientific researches and archives, in becoming clear that the requirement of recognition of 1915 event as genocide is wrong from a historical and legal point of view. Despite all this, Turkey does not raise as a precondition of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Armenia the demand on perpetual abandonment by the Armenian side of the “genocide” claims. Also, Turkey acts as a party raising the proposal on an unbiased investigation by a joint commission of the above-mentioned painful period of the common history of Turks and Armenians, and this proposal is still valid. It is regrettable that Armenia places on the agenda at the earliest opportunity the “genocide” claims against Turkey, and this is an attempt to politicize the history. The dogmatic behavior of the Armenian side in regard to the topics which should be discussed in a scientific manner and in the open space is one of the greatest wrongdoings”, - says the report of the Turkish MFA.

It was mentioned that normalization process that is needed in South Caucasus can start only in the case of Armenia’s concrete steps towards comprehensive peace: “But, it is 27 years that, the aggression of Armenia to Azerbaijan and their uncompromising attitude are obstructing it. Basically, coming to power of Prime minister Nikol Pashinyan in 2018 had created positive expectations for the resolution of Nagorno Garabagh conflict through peace. But as time passes it seems that he has surrendered to some circles in his country that have a tough position, as well as the forces who are against the compromise of diaspora. On the one hand, Pashinyan says that “Garabagh is Armenia”, and on the other hand he says “Turkey is a serious threat for Armenia.”

It is also reflected in the information that Armenia can see a positive response from Turkey in case of taking concrete and sincere steps based on UN and OSCE decisions for the resolution of Nagorno Garabagh conflict, as well as giving up one party’s effort to make the other one accept its thoughts regarding 1915 events."

Note that for a while ago, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan stated in the interview with Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” that Armenia is ready to establish diplomatic relations with Turkey without any preconditions.
