UN Secretary-General: “Developing countries not provided with necessary assistance within framework of fight against pandemics”

A video message of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been sounded at the Summit of the NAM's Contact Group which is held through videoconference on the initiative of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ilham Aliyev under the motto "United against COVID-19" that focused on the fight against coronavirus pandemic, APA reports.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his gratitude to the Azerbaijani President for his initiative on holding the Summit.

The UN Secretary-General said in his address that currently, the communities live through the hard test: “This pandemic causes torments to people, undermines the global economy, and creates anxiety in people’s lives. This shock showed our communities how fragile the economy is".

The Secretary-General said this pandemic threatens the sustainable development goals and thereby has revealed inequality among the economic systems of the countries.

A. Guterres noted that the scale and impacts of this crisis require to work in close cooperation in a coordinated manner, to take courageous and forward-looking steps.

According to the UN Secretary-General, the necessary support has not been provided to the developing countries within the framework of the fight against the pandemic. He said that these countries need large scale support in order to fight against the virus.

UN Secretary-General noted that NAM which unites 2/3 of the world's countries, plays an important role in the formation of global solidarity. “We have 3 urgent priorities: "The UN Secretary-General said in his address that currently, the communities live through the hard test: “This pandemic causes torments to people, undermines the global economy, and creates anxiety in people’s lives. This shock showed our communities how fragile the economy is".

The Secretary-General said this pandemic threatens the sustainable development goals and thereby has revealed inequality among the economic systems of the countries.

Firstly, to eliminate COVID-19 pandemics, remove its social-economic impacts, and set a more powerful basis at the restoration stage.”

Secretary-General noted fight against the crisis should not prevent agenda of 2030 and implementation of expectations regarding the Paris Agreement."
