The legal status of the Caspian Sea can be determined at the upcoming summit of the heads of state of Caspian states in Kazakhstan, said the special representative for humanitarian and economic cooperation with the Caspian countries of the President of the Russian Federation, Ramazan Abdulatipov, APA reported citing TASS.

Abdulatipov noted that discussions on the legal status of the Caspian Sea have been lasting for more than 25 years, and finally, there is a moment when all five countries can come to an agreement.

“It is quite possible that already a convention on the legal status of the Caspian will be signed at the Astana summit this year,” he said.

Abdulatipov noted that it is rather difficult to talk about active economic cooperation without this convention. According to him, further delays in the issue of determining the status of the Caspian will lead to aggravation of environmental problems.

“The Caspian is on the brink of disaster for a number of directions, and the Tehran Convention, signed several years ago, is not very efficient,” he added.
