The Southern Gas Corridor project serves the interests both of the European Union and Azerbaijan, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Federica Mogherini said at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

The press conference took place following the 15th meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council in Brussels on Feb. 9, APA reports.

“The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the examples of our cooperation in the energy sector,” Mogherini said.

She noted that the EU is Azerbaijan’s biggest trade partner.

According to her, the share of the EU countries in the foreign trade turnover of Azerbaijan is 46.5%

The EU is also the largest direct foreign investor in Azerbaijan, said Mogherini, adding. “Azerbaijan tries to diversify its economy. We also want to accelerate Azerbaijan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.”

Mogherini also spoke about the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway commissioned last year.

“The commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was a step that provides a transport link between the EU and Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Central Asia,” she stressed.
