On May 14, 2023, a phone conversation was held between Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov and the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Erika Olson, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told APA.
During the phone conversation, the sides discussed Azerbaijan-U.S. bilateral relations, the current situation in the region, and the steps taken towards the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Deputy Minister Elnur Mammadov said that Azerbaijan as a main initiator towards normalization, including the signing of a future peace agreement, is interested in the successful outcome of the process. Despite this, it was stressed that Armenia's efforts to hinder the peace process, particularly recent military provocations that resulted in casualties in the border region, are intended to undermine international efforts on negotiations.
Erika Olson, for her part, expressed the importance of establishing peace and stability in the region, for which it is necessary to sign a peace agreement. She pointed out that the U.S. side is always ready to support these negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia on a bilateral basis.
