“We went one step further in the Washington negotiations,” Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov told journalists, APA reports.
“Negotiations around peace agreement were conducted in the US. Initiatives regarding the peace deal was put forward by Azerbaijan.
First time it was voiced by President Ilham Aliyev back in 2021. 5 base principles were put forward in February of last year and finally, in October 2022, negotiations on a peace deal were started for the first time in Geneva.
In those negotiations, negotiations were started around the expanded basic principles presented by Azerbaijan. Then a meeting was held in Washington in November. The meeting was planned to be held in Moscow in December. The Armenian side rejected the third meeting and boycotted it by giving various reasons. They used the issue around Lachin Road as an excuse. So, such meetings were not held for about 6 months,” noted Azerbaijani FM.
The minister noted that Armenia returned back to the negotiations table through the mediation of the US.
“We had quite intensive discussions about the peace treaty in Washington for 4 days. That contains several articles, on important issues. We can not say full agreement, there are quite differences between the positions of the parties, however, agreements on some articles over the peace deal were reached in these negotiations.
We went a step further. We should be realistic about this process. Of course, it would be good to agree on several issues in one meeting. We wished it, however, we are not yet ready for this. Azerbaijan fully demonstrates its commitment to the peace process,” he said.
