Azerbaijani MFA: Internationally political-legal assessment not made on January 20 tragedy yet

A commemoration ceremony dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the January 20 tragedy is held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.

Statement of the Ministry on the January 20 tragedy has been sounded in the ceremony.

Head of Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Leyla Abdullayeva has said that the Soviet Army, entered into Azerbaijan in order to break independence determination of people of the country, violated norms of international law, Constitutions of the former USSR and Azerbaijan SSR grossly, and committed an unprecedented massacre against the civilian population: "Immediately after the tragic events, national leader Heydar Aliyev held a press conference at the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow and strongly condemned this atrocity. He demanded a political assessment of the massacre committed against our people and the punishment of the perpetrators. A special session of the Milli Majlis held in 1994, assessed the brutal killing of innocent people on January 20, 1990, as military aggression and a crime. As a result of the discussions, a decision was made on the tragic events committed in Baku on January 20, 1990.

January 20 was declared the National Day of Mourning. 32 years have passed since the January 20 tragedy. However, an international political and legal assessment has not been made yet regarding this event, which is a gross violation of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and other international legal instruments and is one of the most terrible crimes of the twentieth century which, by its very nature and scale."
