There was a trilateral meeting of the chairs of the legislatures of Azerbaijan, Turkiye, and Iran on the sidelines of the 13th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Antalya in Turkiye, APA reports citing the press and public relations of the Milli Majlis.

The participants of the trilateral underscored the significance of the APA plenum’s discourse and the importance of the session itself in that it allowed for wider use of parliamentary diplomacy resources. Besides, the three speakers highlighted the role of their own meeting in the context of relations amongst the parliaments of our states.

Ideas were voiced as to the current state of regional affairs; the speakers stressed the pressing need for regional energy cooperation and broadening of communications as well as they underlined the substantial contribution that energy and transport projects make to the overall regional development. An opinion shared by all the three legislature heads was voiced to the effect that all steps liable to harm, at the present stage, regional stability and to cause tensions should be avoided at all times. On the other hand, it is imperative to take such steps as would promote broader cooperation, the three parliamentary speakers agreed.

It was said at the meeting that new opportunities had arisen in the region, with Azerbaijan having reclaimed her lands from the three decades of Armenian occupation. The speakers again repeated that it was paramount to ink that peace treaty so that constant peace and stability would be secured across the region.

The leaders of the three legislative assemblies also discussed at length a number of other matters of interest and concern to all the three parties.

A tripartite meeting of parliament chairmen of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Iran was held under the chairmanship of Mustafa Sentop, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, APA reports citing Anadolu agency.

The meeting took place within the XIII Plenary Session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly held in Antalya.

Mustafa Shentop, Chairman of the National Assembly, said that it is important for regional states to continue the dialogue among themselves in solving regional issues.

Mr. Shentop expressed the importance of turning such negotiations into a permanent structure on behalf of the parliamentarians.

He assessed the meetings at the level of foreign ministers as a step forward in this direction: "Our coming together as parliament chairmen of three brotherly countries shows that we have a common will to strengthen peace, stability, and security in the region."

Touching on the Azerbaijan-Armenia issue, Sentop reminded that Türkiye supports Azerbaijan and that the process of normalization with Armenia has started.

"We must unite our forces to establish regional and global peace. This approach is also our view on solving problems in the region based on mutual dialogue and cooperation. In fact, our vision for regional normalization is to ensure that there are no outside interventions. For this to happen, it is more appropriate to avoid steps that will create additional tension, insecurity and uncertainty in the region. If we fail to achieve this, the next historic opportunity will be wasted," said Shentop.

Chair of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova and Chairman of the Islamic Council of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also supported the continuation of the tripartite format.

After that, it was agreed to hold the next meeting in Baku or Tehran.
