The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's message was read Summit-level Meeting of Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to COVID-19 on post-pandemic global recovery kicks, APA reports.
Tatyana Valova, director general of the UN Geneva branch, read the appeal.
Antonio Guterres said in his address that he thanks the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Azerbaijan for hosting the thSummit-level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to COVID-19: "Over the years, the role of the Non-Aligned Movement on international platforms is increasing. In the 21st century, the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement in terms of multilateralism is increasing. It has taken measures to promote sustainable development, combat climate change, and preserve peace. The pandemic has affected everyone in the world, 6.5 million people have died, and inequality has increased. At the same time, the pandemic had a great impact on unemployment, women and young people became unemployed. The pandemic has had a devastating effect."
It was noted that countries with low human capital were more negatively affected by the pandemic: "If we want to make recovery measures effective, we must intervene in the global management system. We need to build a global governance architecture so that multilateral platforms can work within their mandates and powers and take action for the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, due to the number of members of the Non-Aligned Movement, it has the opportunity to play an important role in strengthening multilateral cooperation."
The UN Secretary-General noted that the Non-Aligned Movement's parliamentary network and the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations are commendable.
