Speaking at the Baku summit of the Non-Aligned Movement is an important opportunity for us, said Mikael Forrest, New Caledonia's Permanent Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, who attended the Summit-level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to COVID-19 held in Baku, APA reports.

He stated that his country is able to inform the rest of the world about their condition by using this platform.

Mikael Forrest pointed out that they faced French colonial policy even during the pandemic: "Under French pressure, a referendum was held in our country in December 2021, at a time when our local government was fighting the pandemic in cities and villages. However, this was not true during the pandemic. We must ensure that in the future, New Caledonia will be capable of achieving full sovereignty through negotiation and that our country will be sovereign."

He noted that another challenge they confront is related to the effects of climate change: "Some time ago, there were typhoons in our country, which harmed our people. We hope that through this platform we will be able to inform the global community about our situation."
