“Ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus is one of the main priority directions of Russia’s foreign policy and its implementation does not depend on a change of any foreign condition,” said the Director of the Fourth Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry for CIS Countries Denis Gonchar, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.
According to him, the main element in this direction is to assist to the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations on the basis of the statement of Russian, Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders, dated November 9, 2020, and trilateral; statements dated January 11 and November 26, 2021.
"As known, to ensure a ceasefire in November 2020, the Russian peacekeeping contingent was deployed on the line of contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone in November 2020 in order to ensure a ceasefire. Our peacekeepers also help to establish a peaceful life - to deliver humanitarian aid, restore infrastructure, to clear the area of mines."
He noted that a number of tasks are being addressed within the implementation of trilateral agreements between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, including the start of the process of delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the opening of economic and transport ties in the region. In particular, we are ready to provide advisory assistance to the bilateral commission on border delimitation and present the necessary cartographic materials. We are about to reach an agreement as soon as possible on specific projects related to the restoration and development of transport infrastructure. Besides, under the auspices of Russia, ethno-confessional dialogues and contacts have been launched through the civil society of the two countries. We are helping to agree on a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
