Zakharova says Armenian authority is responsible for situation on Lachin road

"The current situation in the Lachin corridor is the result of Armenia recognizing Nagorno-Garabakh as the territory of Azerbaijan," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said as she responded to an Armenian journalist's question regarding the Russian peacekeepers being responsible for the detention of the Armenian football players, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag, at the Lachin border checkpoint, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.

"This was registered at the summit attended by the leaders of both countries last October and this May under the auspices of the European Union (“Armenia recognising the former Nagorno-Garabakh as the territory of Azerbaijan” - ed.). It was clearly stated in the statement of the Russian MFA "On the situation around Garabagh" dated July 15, 2023. In this context, we consider it inappropriate, incorrect and unfair to put the responsibility on the Russian peacekeeping contingent. The duty of Russian peacekeeping contingent consists of to provide all possible assistance to Azerbaijan to ensure all rights and security of the Garabagh Armenians, including establishing a direct dialogue between Baku and Khankandi in the new situation that emerged after the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh by Yerevan and the Armenian authorities as Azerbaijani territory,” - Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman added.
