On September 20, 2023, during local anti-terrorism operations in the village of Janyatag in the Tartar district of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a group of military personnel from the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participating in the operation, opened fire on a vehicle of the Russian Federation's Peacekeeping Contingent (RPC) stationed in the area, suspecting it to be associated with illegal Armenian armed groups due to the complex terrain and foggy-rainy weather conditions, the Press Service of the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan told APA.
As a result of the incident, five military personnel of the RPC were killed. Additionally, on the same day, a "Kamaz" brand vehicle belonging to the RPC, located within the mentioned residential area, was fired upon with firearms by unidentified members of the illegal Armenian armed groups. As a result of the incident, one soldier of the RPC was killed, and one military personnel was injured.
In connection with both incidents, a criminal case has been initiated by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code, and the investigation has been referred to the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office for further proceedings.
Today, the Prosecutors General of Azerbaijan and Russia held a telephone conversation. The Russian side was offered heartfelt condolences regarding the incident. Both parties agreed on conducting a thorough investigation with close and mutual communication regarding the committed crime. Currently, investigative and operational measures are being carried out by the prosecution authorities in relation to the criminal case.
