Azerbaijan to set up a new agency under the state program for development of space industry

Baku. Nijat Mustafayev - APA-Economics. Under the state program for the creation and development of space industry approved by the President of Azerbaijan on 17 August 2009 it is slated to set up a new agency orbit, manage and operate a telecommunications satellite.

In addition, the new agency will be tasked with developing a feasibility study to choose the optimal orbital slot for the satellite.

According to the document, before the end of 2010, it is intended to suggest measures and proposals on preparation of legal acts on orbiting, operation and management of satellites and satellite systems, on ways of improving transmission capacity, contracting firms to manufacture and launch the satellite, as well as installation of ground systems for the management and operation of the satellite.

As part of the program, by 2013 it is planned to make proposals for the in-country assembly and production of VSAT and parts of other terminal stations, satellite receivers of different types and functions (internet, direct TV, GPS, etc.) in order to create the space industry.


The main purpose is to enhance the competitiveness of new satellites put into orbit, the commercial viability of fixed satellite systems, regulation of prices of services provided through the new satellites, upgrading the infrastructure for the new satellite services, etc.

The establishment of the space industry, receipt and processing of spatial information will be carried out by the National Aerospace Agency under the Ministry of Defense Industry, and the telecommunications satellites will be managed and operated by AzerSpace.

The state program will be funded from the state budget, domestic and foreign investment, loans, grants and other sources.
