Iran and Azerbaijan to join main roads and railways

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan will join main roads and railways, Iranian Minister of Road Construction and Urban Development Muhammad Islami said during a visit to Astara today, APA's Tehran bureau reports.

According to him, an agreement has already been reached on connecting the main roads of the two countries.

The Minister noted that the improvement of the Rasht-Astara railway is one of the important projects carried out by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Islami praised the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran in the transport sector and said that the increase in transit and trade has a positive impact on relations between the two countries.

The minister also noted that an agreement had been reached with Azerbaijan on the construction of the Baku-Astara-Rasht highway and the unification of the highways of the two countries: “For this, a new bridge will be built over Astarachay. The foundation of the new bridge will be laid in the near future.”

He also said that the Rasht highway would be extended to Astara, and then to Ardabil.
