“A serious shortage of water in Azerbaijan is observed. 42% of the country's territory is subject to soil erosion”, said Senior Specialist for Environment, Natural Resources and Blue Economy of the World Bank's Europe and Central Asia Sustainable Development Department, Sacha Eichberger during his speech, APA-Economics reports.

“Which is probably the reason for lower soil fertility (up to 1.2%) and consequent GDP losses. Material productivity is less than in similar countries and the energy and emission burden of the majority of the sectors that have energy consumption is higher. Climate change will negatively affect the viability of natural assets. Despite that, the environmental expenses in Azerbaijan are 20 times lower than in EU member countries. These include expenses such as the use and protection of water resources, air protection, land recultivation, and waste disposal and they are critical areas for the adaptation to climate change. These serious difficulties still should be solved, but as a first step, investment in system changes, adaptation measures for increasing climate resilience and environmental improvement, natural capital protection, asset diversification, and decarbonization will help the country to preserve its natural resource base”, said S. Eichberger.
