According to Syrian state-run news agency SANA, the mine planted by Daesh militants exploded Saturday in the Syrian eastern province of Deir ez-Zo province, ONA reports citing Sputnik.

As a result of the blast, four local residents were killed and 36 people were injured, SANA reported.

Despite the fact that the years-long armed conflict in Syria seems to be nearing its end, the country still bears the traces of violent clashes and the presence of rebel and terrorist groups. The Syrian military's engineering units carry out regular operations to clear affected regions of mines and other types of explosive devices.

Moreover, according to the UN's data made public in January, the Daesh terror group continues to control parts of Deir ez-Zor in the Middle Euphrates River valley, where civilians remain trapped amid continued airstrikes.

United Nations assessments from Syria reportedly continue to cast doubt on an assessment made last December by US President Donald Trump that the Daesh terrorists had been defeated.
