Sustaining the pressure on Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, Washington blocked all assets of the country’s state oil and gas company PDVSA and imposed a ban on deals with the company until opposition leader Juan Guaido receives control of the company, ONA reports citing Sputniknews.

"We are in favour of sanctions targeting Maduro and people immediately close to him specifically and that do not make the lives of Venezuelan citizens worse", German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Adebahr stated.

Germany's move follows similar punitive measures by Washington, which sanctioned the wife of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the country's officials and the state oil and gas company, citing the "destruction of democracy in Venezuela".

Prior to that, Berlin called on Maduro to hold snap elections in the country, threatening to recognise Venezuelan Parliament Speaker Juan Guaido as interim president of the country otherwise.
