The first in the past seven years parliamentary election in Thailand has ended in an atmosphere of uncertainty, without any preliminary results announced, ONA reports citing TASS.
The election commission appointed a news conference for 14:00 local time on Monday (10:00 Moscow time), during which information is to be given as to the distribution of seats among the parties in the parliament.
According to early reports, the voter turnout in the Sunday’s election was about 66%, below 80% or even 90% forecasted by analysts. The current figure is lower than during the election of July 3, 2011, when it amounted to 75%.
According to a TASS’s source in the election commission, the Pheu Thai Party is leading after more than 92% of ballot papers have been counted. It may get 146 seats in the parliament. It is followed by the Palang Pracha Rath Party with 141 mandates. The Future Forward Party may get 85 seats, while Bhum Jai Thai Party - 55. The Democrat Party may secure only 36 seats.
According to the Bangkok Post newspaper, the leader is the Palang Pracha Rath Party that has secured support of 7.5 million voters. The paper says the Pheu Thai Party got 7 million votes, while the Future Forward Party - 5.2 million. The Democrat Party has been supported by 3.19 million voters, and the Bhum Jai Thai Party - 3.17 million, the paper says.
With this in view, the leader of the Democrat Party has stepped down because of the party’s poor showing in the general election.
