An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Sudan may take place in the coming two days, a UN diplomatic source told TASS on Thursday, ONA reports citing TASS.

"The US and the EU have requested that closed-door consultations take place soon," the source said, adding that Friday April 12 was the soonest available date. The Security Council’s current chair - Germany - would determine the time.

Earlier on Thursday, the Sudanese media reported that a military coup had taken place in the country and President Omar al-Bashir had been ousted after 30 years in power.

The Sudanese army suspended the country’s constitution, dissolved the parliament, government and local authorities and declared a three-month state of emergency in the country. The army also formed a military council to rule the country during an interim period that is expected to last two years.
