Azerbaijani Press Council appeals to president regarding Mehman Aliyev

The Press Council of Azerbaijan has appealed to the country’s President, Ilham Aliyev, over the detention of the editor-in-chief of Turan News Agency.

The appeal letter highly appreciated President Ilham Aliyev’s attitude to the Azerbaijani media, the solution of its problems and difficulties as well as the improvement of journalists’ social conditions, the Press Council told APA.

“We can say with confidence that you are a leader who defends freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Therefore, journalists in the country consider you their friends, and undoubtedly, this friendship is forever,” said the appeal.

“Mehmah Aliyev is charged under articles â„– 213.1 (tax evasion) and 308 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. He has recently been detained by law-enforcement authorities, an investigation is underway. Turning to you, we rely on your humanism. We believe that you will take the same position in relation to the head of Turan News Agency.”

“Dear Mr. President, we ask you to contribute to a fair solution of the issue related to Mehman Aliyev within the laws of Azerbaijan. We are confident that your sensitive approach will play a decisive role in solving the problem,” the appeal said.
