"Unfortunately, Azerbaijan cannot receive an adequate response from the international community on the issue of landmines," the chairman of the Azerbaijan Campaign Against Mines public union Hafiz Safikhanov said to journalists, APA reports.

He said that if in the 2020 report, Azerbaijan was on the top 10 in the world in the terms of the level of contamination by mines and other unexploded ammunitions, according to the latest statistics, it is on top three, five: "The number of mine victims is more than the total number of mine victims in the rest of the Southern Caucasus. To date, 301 people have been victims of landmines, of which 55 are civilians. Mines are a big problem for the country and Azerbaijan is trying to overcome this problem at the expense of its own strength.

Until now more than 80.000 ha lands have been cleared of mines, and more than 87.000 mines and unexploded ammunition have been neutralized.

According to the estimates, there are more than 1 mln ore more mines and unexploded ordnance in the liberated territorises of Azerbaijan.To solve the landmine problem, we need to build on international experience and increase awareness".
