Jewish community of Bulgaria issues statement on Armenia’s latest provocation

Zionist Federation of Bulgaria has issued a statement regarding military provocation of Armenian Armed Forces in Tovuz direction of Armenia-Azerbaijan state border, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Bulgaria told APA.

The statement reads that the Zionist Federation of Bulgaria reflects the points of Jews in Bulgaria and non-Jews who oppose aggression and oppression, support democracy, human rights, peoples’ sovereignty, the dignity of people everywhere, and learn from the past without repeating the mistakes informed by history.

"We are very concerned about the recent act of violence in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan committed by Armenia on July 12, 2020, in the Tovuz region to seize Azerbaijani positions, which resulted in the death of 12 Azerbaijani servicemen and an old civilian.

We, Jews, and non-Jews who support the state of Israel understand the appeal and pain of the Azerbaijani people. We especially remember Albert Agarunov, an Azerbaijani Jew and tank commander who died for his homeland while rescuing his comrades during the defense of Shusha, the historical capital of Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Today, Albert Agarunov has the highest military title after his death - the status of the National Hero of Azerbaijan. The escalation of combat in recent days in the region is the result of the inability of the international community to influence the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno Garabagh conflict. Armenia violated international law and demonstrated disrespect to peace and stability in the region. Deeply concerned about Armenia's recent provocations along with the border with Azerbaijan, we Zionist Federation of Bulgaria demand to cease all military operations and to withdraw the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

We look forward not only to the day when the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Garabagh conflict ends but also the day when the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan is restored over the whole territory within its internationally recognized borders,” the statement reads.
